Rare-earth magnets are in general much stronger than alnico or ferrite magnets. A US electrical engineer, born in Croatia and named Nikola Tesla has become synonymous with the measurement of magnetic flux density, or strength. So, a strength of one weber per square meter (Wb/m²) is called 1 tesla, or 1T. Ferrite and ceramic magnets typically exhibit fields of 50 to 100 milliteslas, while a rare earth magnet may produce a field strength higher than 1.2T. Rare Earth elements are a group of 16 elements with an atomic number from 57 to 71 inclusive, and some of these are used in different combinations to produce rare earth magnets for different applications. Some of the more expensive magnets are lower strength but operate under higher temperature conditions.
